Curb and Gutter Types

The most common type with a vertical face and horizontal gutter. Typical dimensions:

  • Curb Height: 6 inches (15 cm)
  • Curb Width: 6 inches (15 cm)
  • Gutter Width: 24 inches (60 cm)
  • Gutter Thickness: 6 inches (15 cm)

Features a sloped face that allows vehicles to easily mount the curb. Typical dimensions:

  • Curb Height: 4 inches (10 cm)
  • Curb Width: 12 inches (30 cm)
  • Gutter Width: 18 inches (45 cm)
  • Gutter Thickness: 6 inches (15 cm)

Features a steep vertical face designed to prevent vehicles from mounting the curb. Typical dimensions:

  • Curb Height: 8 inches (20 cm)
  • Curb Width: 8 inches (20 cm)
  • Gutter Width: 24 inches (60 cm)
  • Gutter Thickness: 8 inches (20 cm)

Similar to rollover curbs but with a more gradual slope. Typical dimensions:

  • Curb Height: 3 inches (7.5 cm)
  • Curb Width: 12 inches (30 cm)
  • Gutter Width: 12 inches (30 cm)
  • Gutter Thickness: 6 inches (15 cm)

Construction Tips

  • Use concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 3000 psi (20 MPa)
  • Install expansion joints every 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters)
  • Ensure proper drainage with a slope of at least 1/4 inch per foot (2%)
  • Cure concrete for at least 7 days for optimal strength
  • Consider adding fiber reinforcement to reduce cracking
  • Use formwork that can withstand the pressure of wet concrete

Regulatory Considerations

Always check local building codes and ADA requirements before construction:

  • Curb ramps may be required at pedestrian crossings
  • Some municipalities have specific curb and gutter design standards
  • Permits may be required before construction
  • Drainage requirements vary by location
